Here are a few general tips that Riley says everyone should be aware of:
- Obtain a collar and ID tag for your dog that includes your name, address, and telephone number.
- Follow local laws for licensing your dog and vaccinate him or her against rabies and other diseases.
- Follow this simple rule: off your property, on a leash.
- Take your dog to the veterinarian for regular check-ups.
- Maintain your dog’s veterinary records and keep them in a readily-accessible place that you will not forget.
- Puppies and kittens will chew on anything! Keep all electric cords out of reach or covered to prevent chewing.
- Don’t leave any human or pet medicines out in the open including vitamins.
- Keep all painting supplies and chemicals, including substances such as rodent poisons, in closed cabinets. For example, anti-freeze has a sweet smell and taste to animals but is toxic and can be lethal.
- Fence your outside pool or pond. Many dogs and cats are unable to swim to safety when their coats are soaked. It can also be difficult or impossible for your dog to get out of the pool or pond without human intervention or the assistance of a product such as the Skamper Ramp!
- Keep a photo of your dog in your Emergency Kit.
- Make sure you know what plants in and outside your home are toxic to your dog. See Poisonous Plants for more information.
- Keep a list of numbers that you will need in case of a pet emergency. These will include your vet, a 24-hour dog emergency contact, poison control hotline, trusted neighbors and friends, and any additional numbers that may be useful in case of a pet emergency.
- Be loyal and patient with your faithful companion!
