Advance planning is key to keeping you, your family, and companion animals safe in the event of an emergency. Depending on where you live, you may experience wildfires or floods, earthquakes, snow storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, mud slides, or chemical spills. Emergency planning can help to keep minor injuries from becoming more serious, prevent dangerous conditions from developing, or even save lives! The following steps will help you and your loved ones stay safe when disaster strikes.
  1. Remember to make sure your pets are properly identified.
  2. Keep ID tags with up-to-date contact information for all pets along with leashes and carriers in your emergency kit. Remember that no commercially available emergency kit will contain everything to address your pet’s particular needs and other items will have to be added. You should also have each individual pet’s medical history (including a copy of their rabies vaccination certificate) and other documents including a picture of your pet. If your pet has medical or behavioral problems, then be sure to place that information in your kit as well.
  3. Make sure to have a proper Pet Emergency Preparedness Kit! Your pet’s kit should include all the essentials for an emergency particular to the area you live in. A few items to add will be your pet’s favorite toy (pets under stress will welcome the familiar) and an ample supply of your pet’s food sealed in an airtight container. Your pet will already be stressed in an unfamiliar emergency situation and does not need the added burden of having to adjust to new food. Make sure you have a good supply of your pet’s medication too. Consider the shelf life of included items and rotate all medicines and food every 3 to 6 months. See Riley’s Pet Emergency Preparedness Kit for more details.
  4. Last but not least, place your emergency “Pets Inside” sticker on your front and back doors listing the number of pets inside so others can evacuate them in your absence.
