During an emergency, a pet is sure to sense the oncoming disaster prior to most humans and subsequently experience the nervousness of their families during the event.

• A proper kennel crate left in a safe area will give your pet a secure and reassuring location to stay during and after the disaster strikes.

• If a pet is not crated during an emergency, a proper harness and leash will provide better control than a typical collar, which is safer for both you and your pet.

• It is important that dog owners not let their pet out into debris fields caused by a tornado which can contain broken glass, splintered wood and exposed nails as well as chemicals that dogs can easily get into. Having sturdy dog booties will help protect their feet and pads.

• If you are outside with your dog in high winds prior to an event, it is important to protect them and their eyes from flying debris.

• If your home or yard has sustained any damage make sure to check the dog’s bedding, toys and exterior housing for glass shards or debris, which can seriously injure your pet after an event.

• Ample water as well as food and treats should be kept in your safe area to use while waiting for an event to pass. Be sure to include emergency information and back up medications your dog may need.

• Finally, because your dog will be wary of the danger and also sense the stress you may feel, be sure to give them some much needed love, attention and hug time. This will go a long way in making your pet feel safe.
